Decryption Successful!
When you're ready, you can head to the festival. Try to remember the information from the decrypted data sent by the previous traveller!
You can't participate in the experiment without agreeing to the terms. You can close this webpage.
Thanks for your time and have a nice day!
There seems to be a problem with the URL. Please contact the experimenter, Rayn Epremianmodule leader.
Our records show you've already done another version of this HIT, and we can't have repeat participants. Sorry, you can't complete this HIT. Close this window and return to Mechanical Turk.
You haven't made a selection. Before starting the experiment, you have to agree (or not) to the terms.
Close this and make a selection to continue.
If you're playing on a mobile phone, the game will look better in landscape mode. However, some things might not look quite right.
This task is part of research being conducted at the University of Edinburgh (by Rayn Epremian and Dr Matt Spike) and Newcastle University (Dr Christine Cuskley). The task involves playing a simple role-playing game which will appear in a series of written passages. After playing the game, you will be asked to compose a short piece of writing. Please read this additional detailed information about the study. You may retain a copy for your records.
You will be paid £5$5 for your participation. You will be given full instructions as you work through the game. After you've finished the game, you'll be asked to answer a few questions about your experience. The study will take you approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Clicking the "Agree" box below indicates that:
You have read and understood the detailed study information.
You agree that your anonymised responses may be kept permanently in the research archives at the University of Edinburgh, and may be used by qualified researchers for teaching and research purposes.
You agree that your anonymised data may be made publicly available for general use, e.g., released as part of scholarly publication.
You voluntarily agree to participate and can stop or withdraw at any time without penalty.

Before we get started with the task, we have a few basic questions about you. Once these are done you'll recieve more specific instructions about the task.
We'll start by making sure you aren't a bot or a script.
Follow the instructions below carefully so we can make sure you aren't a robot.
How old are you?
You are an interstellar traveler and your spaceship has just crashed on the unknown ocean planet Eurybia, home to aliens called Eurybians. With your engines broken, you have no choice but to start a new life on this planet. Luckily, your spaceship’s computer is still working, and it has rendered you a Eurybian body so that you can seamlessly join this alien society. This is you now:
As soon as you land, you are invited to the New Moon Festival, the largest event of this society, in which all Eurybians gather at the Great Reef, hosted by the Conchillar, the leader of the Eurybians. It is at this festival that the next Conchillar will be chosen, to become the leader of the Eurybians for the next Moon Cycle, until the next Festival occurs. The Eurybians elect their Conchillar each cycle based on who they agree is the most well-behaved Eurybian at the Festival.
You must learn the customs of Eurybian society and fit in as best you can, so that you can thrive in your new home. If you learn quickly, you might even have a chance at becoming Conchillar! Try not to give away that you don’t belong here. Are you ready to head to the festival?
Luckily for you, you have discovered a data card left behind by a previous explorer. Reading their message might give you some clues about how to thrive in Eurybian society!
When you're ready, you can head to the festival. Try to remember the information from the decrypted data sent by the previous traveller!
Congratulations! You earned a perfect score. After that perfect display of Eurybian values, you’ve been unanimously selected to be the new Conchillar! Excellent job fitting in on your new home planet. Continue to be a good example to your fellow Eurybians and throw them a super fun festival next time the Six Moons go dark!
Congratulations! You’ve been chosen as the next Conchillar! After that near-perfect display of Eurybian values, only a few Eurybians didn’t vote for you. Continue to be a good example to your fellow Eurybians and throw them a super fun festival next time the Six Moons go dark, and you’re sure to have a wonderful life on your new home planet.

Well done, young Eurybian! You still have a few things left to learn, but you made a good impression at your first Festival and nobody noticed you were out of place. Remember your manners at the next one, dress your best, and you might be Conchillar one day!
Not bad, young Eurybian. You may not be the proverbial ‘social sea snail’ but you’re polite enough, and you didn’t get caught. Try to remember your manners at the next New Moon Festival, dress your best, and you’ll have a decent life on this planet.
You still have a lot to learn about Eurybian values. Your presence at this New Moon Festival was forgettable at best, and you’re lucky no one noticed you were an imposter. Try to remember your manners next time if you want to make something of yourself here.
You still have a lot to learn about Eurybian values. One or two Eurybians got suspicious, and now you won’t be allowed any accessories at the next New Moon Festival, which will put you at a disadvantage. Do better next time if you want to survive and thrive here.
You clearly haven’t learned your manners. What an embarrassment! Several Eurybians were suspicious and decided not to invite you to the next New Moon Festival. You’d better study up if you want an invitation to the one after that!
You’ve truly embarrassed yourself in front of the whole community, and they all agree you don’t belong here. You won’t be invited to another New Moon Festival until you redeem yourself, and that’s very shameful in this society. Life on this planet isn’t going to be easy for you.
Oh dear. You made such an unseemly impression that the Eurybians noticed you were an imposter. You’ve been expelled from Eurybian society. No more Festivals for you. Maybe you should try to fix your spaceship.

Phew, you survived your first day on Eurybia! It might have been difficult to fit in at the New Moon Festival without knowing anything about the Eurybian society’s customs. You've managed to repair your engine, but you need to leave Eurybia within the next 15 minutes - if you wait any longer orbital debris will block your exit for the next 207 planetary cycles (approx. 949.2 Earth years).
In the spirit of space exploration, your task now is to write a short story that will help the next explorer have an easier time fitting in. Your story can be as similar to or different from your own experiences at the Festival as you like, but you must write a story, not a list. Think of it like a fairy tale, or a fable. Remember that the purpose of your story is to help the next explorer learn Eurybian customs, and you must complete the story before you launch.
Write a story for the next traveller before launch!
You haven't written a story for the next traveller!

In the spirit of space exploration, your next task is to write a list of rules that will help the next visitor have an easier time fitting in. The list can draw on your own experiences from the festival, and can include up to 10 rules. Remember that the purpose of your list is to help the next explorer learn Eurybian customs.
